The original bill validators were developed by Mars, using technology that used a magnetic head to read the magnetic ink printed on currency. Instead of magnetic heads, vending machines now use photocells to detect various shades of ink on the different dollar bills. But just like the original parts, these bill validators can also experience wear and tear.
Even now, dirty money can cause an issue when trying to be read by a bill validator. Money travels a long way, and will be handled by countless persons before it ends up in a vending machine. Pairing an old dollar bill with an old vending machine only complicates the problem.
