Why Do Vending Machines Reject Your Money?

Each time a vending machine rejects a dollar bill, it becomes increasingly more frustrating. You’ve tried a couple tricks, like rolling it along a corner, or folding each corner flat, but it still won’t take. Many consumers ask why vending machines reject bills, but the answer is actually complicated.

Coins are rarely rejected by vending machines. This is because vending machines can easily differentiate coins because of their size and weight. A vending machine needs to “read” a dollar bill, and that requires some high-tech internal equipment.

First, the vending machine needs to determine if the dollar bill is real or counterfeit. Next, it must determine the denomination of the bill. The human eye can instantly tell the difference between a $1 bill and a $50 bill, but a vending machine needs to put in a little more work to distinguish between the two.

Fortunately, vending machine bill validators have come a long way since they were first implemented in the 1960s. The original bill validators were developed by Mars, using technology that used a magnetic head to read the magnetic ink printed on currency. It worked well until the equipment would clog up from dirt and grime.

Instead of magnetic heads, vending machines now use photocells to detect various shades of ink on the different dollar bills. But just like the original parts, these bill validators can also experience wear and tear.

Even now, dirty money can cause an issue when trying to be read by a bill validator. Money travels a long way, and will be handled by countless persons before it ends up in a vending machine. Pairing an old dollar bill with an old vending machine only complicates the problem.

However, if all the parts inside the vending machine are in perfect condition, the rejection could be from a lack of change, which is rare.

For this reason, and many others, J. Bos Vending strives to keep our equipment in top working order, and our machines are always stocked with the freshest inventory J.
